Argument
Artist-Run Spaces, around and about. 2012-2015-2017 traces the history of the research programme of the Art Master’s at ESAD in Reims. Interested in the independent character of this type of self-managed structure that exists throughout the world, we decided to make it a school. From then on, the unique sociocultural, political and aesthetic characteristics of Artist-Run Spaces began to unfold. Their forward-looking and international programmes, their collaborative economy and their unifying dimension based on a shared energy are all areas for exploration. Questions of visibility in an already established art network give way to questions of emergence and resistance in economic and cultural contexts that are sometimes not very favourable to artistic production. In addition to this, we are keen to meet several Artist-Run Spaces to understand their specific characteristics. A journey is thus taking shape between the United States, France, Argentina and Morocco, to which a particular focus is given here. Alternating documents, communications and conversations, this edition is structured according to the territories surveyed, in a free and original nomadism. But it also shows how a whole new generation of young artists who are familiar with these collective organisation and dissemination practices (Le Marquis, Firstlaid, Chevaline Corporation, Chers Amis) have been able to draw inspiration from this model to create a founding system in today’s art.
The graphic design of the book, edited by Rozenn Canevet, was the subject of a graphic design workshop supervised by Brice Domingues with Aymeric Drogon, Clarisse Espada, Inès Fontaine, Johan Héloïse, Cécile Lenrouilly, Louise Malclès, Cindy Paris, Manon Rouyer and Charlotte Tanguy. Three graphic versions have been produced and distributed on the ESAD Reims website. One is published and distributed by Les presses du réel.
